Mother

Mother is a powerful and revolutionary novel by Maxim Gorky, one of Russia’s most influential writers. In this stirring work, Gorky tells the story of a mother's transformation from a simple, obedient woman into a fierce revolutionary, driven by love, hope, and the desire for justice. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Russia, Mother explores the awakening of political consciousness in the working class, particularly through the experiences of the protagonist, Pelageya Vlasova. Initially a humble, unassuming figure, Pelageya becomes the emotional backbone of a revolutionary movement as she watches her son and his comrades fight against oppression. The novel is a testament to the power of personal transformation and the strength of the human spirit in the face of injustice. Through Pelageya's eyes, Gorky captures the emotional and psychological toll of living under an authoritarian regime, while also celebrating the resilience of the human heart. Mother is not only a tale of individual awakening, but also an impassioned call to arms for social change and the empowerment of the working class. A timeless work that has inspired generations, Mother remains a poignant exploration of love, sacrifice, and the struggle for a better world.
