The Symposium

The Symposium, Plato presents one of the most celebrated dialogues on love, desire, and the nature of beauty. Set during a banquet attended by Socrates and a group of notable Athenians, the participants each deliver speeches praising Eros, the god of love, offering diverse perspectives on its role in human life. Through these speeches, the dialogue explores physical desire, emotional attachment, intellectual connection, and the pursuit of higher ideals. Socrates’ reflections, informed by the teachings of Diotima, reveal love as a path to wisdom, moral growth, and the contemplation of eternal truths. Blending poetic storytelling with philosophical inquiry, The Symposium remains a timeless meditation on the power of love, the search for beauty, and the human desire to transcend the ordinary in pursuit of the good and the true.
